IONA XS is an electric mini-truck shorter than an electric Mini with a bed as big as Ford F150 Lightning

Small but Mighty & Lower Total Cost of Ownership

AVEVAI is an electric commercial vehicle (ECV) manufacturer from Singapore, founded by Argun Boldkhet in 2018 that aims to provide affordable ECVs for SMEs but in a right-sized collection that fits in today’s busy city.

IONA XS has two battery pack options with a single pack of 11.52 kWh capacity and a double pack of 23 kWh capacity. It offers a single motor configuration only capable of 27 horsepower or 20 kW peak power and with a top speed of 70 km/h.

The company states that the truck will have a range of 100+ km on a single pack and 200+ km on a double pack. It charges from 20% to 80% in just 4 hours with a 3.3 kW of OBC. IONA XS has a payload of up to 500 kg, which is fairly close to many standard-sized pickup trucks. For comparison, a 2023 Ford F-150’s payload capacity starts at 594 kg.

All of the above comes in an incredibly small size. It is only 3700 mm long – a little shorter than the electric Mini and 1480 mm wide. That is twice as short as the Ford F150 Lightning, and 1800 mm shorter than the Rivian R1T. And at 1500 kg it weighs the same as the Toyota Camry. IONA XS offers various configurations as well. Optional cargo configurations include food boxes, flat beds, utility beds with three-sided tailgates, and boxes for secure storage, all pointing to potential commercial applications for the vehicle.

The design choices can be summarized as “affordability first – with enough payload to be amazing, and start experiencing the lowest TCO right after purchase,” said AVEVAI. And by not going overblown with spec, the company focuses on offering the best for less to its customers.

IONA XS uses iron-based prismatic cells with a specific energy density of 110 Wh/kg and can house single or double battery packs under the body frame. It is more energy efficient than the rest of the industry because they use the correct battery size and capacity that suits the daily use of SMEs. And they are not aiming to break any records with the longest driving range like some other EVs with unreasonable big battery packs.

Mini EV and IONA XS lengths compared
IONA XS was built with safety in mind from the get-go. The seating position for the driver and co-driver is hidden behind a crumple zone and fitted with ABS and EPS. But more importantly, IONA XS is safer for the environment and surprisingly reduces the high maintenance cost! Its electric powertrain translates into significant cost savings, making it an economical choice for businesses big and small. Not only do these massive trucks and SUVs harm the environment, but they also use more resources both to manufacture and to operate. It’s a no go and we need to do something about it.

IONA XS offers a solution here. With the power of a medium-sized truck, but utilizing fewer resources, it guarantees a rapid ROI post-purchase. In the booming world of global last-mile delivery, where high TCO is a concern, SMEs now have the ultimate transport mechanism. IONA XS provides plenty of cargo space and the advantage of a compact vehicle, perfectly catering to their needs. Brace yourself for the future of small, efficient, and cost-effective deliveries!

AVEVAI thinks that the global market is ready for a truck of this size. So, what if they could have even more utility in an even smaller truck? It could be a hit, especially given that there is not nothing else like it currently and small delivery trucks are already popular in Europe and Asia, so there’s your proof-of-concept.

How much does it cost, and when can we get it?

IONA XS is priced at less than $20K. And in the future, AVEVAI will offer 3.5 tons and higher models, at an extremely competitive price. This would be good for people who know they do not need a huge battery, or for businesses with set daily routes.

As for the delivery, IONA XS has already been EU homologated, and is ready for delivery to global customers. AVEVAI has already entered into serious talks for CKD plants in Southeast Asia and is in advanced talks with Indian companies while Tesla is planning to enter the market soon. And the total annual output capacity is 50,000 units.

SingPost pilots electric scooters and vans, with the aim to replace current light vehicles by 2026 https://avevai.com/singpost-pilots-electric-scooters-and-vans-with-the-aim-to-replace-current-light-vehicles-by-2026/ Mon, 16 Aug 2021 20:46:00 +0000 https://avevai.com/?p=2476

SingPost pilots electric scooters and vans, with the aim to replace current light vehicles by 2026

Singapore Post announced on Monday (Aug 16) that it will replace all of its lighter vehicles with electric ones by 2026. For a start, it has begun pilots of two electric scooters and two vans.

The Iona RAP three-wheeler scooter is being considered in the pilot to replace the company’s 700 motorcycles and scooters that run on internal combustion engines.

The BYD T3 electric vans, if successful, are also expected to gradually phase out SingPost’s 140 petrol vans as their certificates of entitlement expire in the next five years.

SingPost’s target is to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent by 2030.

The pilots should end sometime in the next few months and could be further expanded, if criteria like safety are met.

“As Singapore’s leading last-mile and postal service provider, our delivery vehicles traverse the length and breadth of the nation every day,” said Mr Vincent Phang, chief executive of SingPost Singapore and its postal services.

“There is a tremendous potential for us to do better for the planet.”

The two Iona RAP scooters will be piloted on the Anson-Road-Shenton Way and Emerald Hill-Cairnhill routes, and will appear in a distinctive green livery, SingPost said.

They have been found to emit roughly 75 per cent less greenhouse gases compared with their internal combustion engine counterparts. Each charge gives a range of 120km, far in excess of the 15-20km average that postmen travel each day.

Their 500-litre cargo space also compares favourably with the 462-litre cargo volume of SingPost’s current three-wheeler scooters and the 164 litres of its motorcycles.

SingPost has also ensured the scooter’s stability and that the electric motor is adapted to the frequent starts and stops required in delivery work.

The Land Transport Authority has approved the vehicle as a potential alternative.

The BYD T3 electric van emits about 50 per cent less greenhouse gases than petrol-fuelled vans and has a range of 300km on a full charge, with a maximum cargo volume of 3,800 litres.

SingPost said it is also in talks with various distributors to replace its heavy vehicle fleet with electric trucks, making it the first postal service in the Asia-Pacific region to commit to a 100 per cent electric delivery fleet.

Minister of State for Communications and Information and National Development Tan Kiat How said the pilots are an example of SingPost’s commitment to meeting the evolving postal needs of people and businesses.

He said that with the shift towards e-commerce, there will be a surge in parcel volumes, adding: “This shows SingPost’s commitment to environmental sustainability.”

SingPost said it will continue to ensure that fuel consumption and emissions decrease, through, for example, using innovative ways to optimise fleet routes and encouraging fuel-saving driving habits.

Other big local companies that have committed to fully electrifying their fleet include Wildlife Reserves Singapore.

The park operator is in the process of converting all its trams at the Singapore Zoo, River Safari, Night Safari and Jurong Bird Park to run on electricity by the end of this year.

Its entire internal fleet, consisting of vans, lorries, buggies and tow tractors, should turn electric by 2025.

Transport operator SMRT is set to change all its taxis to electric ones within five years.

Electric vehicles are seen as the future as they are more environmentally friendly, but experts have warned that focus should also be put on how the electricity used to charge the vehicles is produced.

For that, more sustainable energy sources like the greater harnessing of wind and solar energy might be needed.

AVEVAI reveals electric vans powered by supercaps

IONAV

AVEVAI, a start-up from Singapore is showing the first electric vehicles of their new Iona series at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China. They developed the chassis of their electric van and small e-truck together with Daimler and Foton but the real innovation is in the system.

To power their Iona series of light commercial electric vehicles, Avevai has turned to e-Synergy, also of Singapore, for their graphene-infused supercapacitor technology. This energy management system allows for what Avevai calls an “unrivaled range” of 330 km for the Iona Van and 300 km for the Iona electric truck.

Avevai set up their cooperation with e-Synergy long term it appears as they patented their jointly developed Graphene Energy Management System (GEMS) together. They say they can customise it for use in any electric vehicle and plan to market it in 2019. Controlled by a smart algorithm, GEMS allows charging and discharging cycles to run in nanoseconds and Avevai claims up to 85% of energy captured through regenerative braking.

In the real world, this means said battery technology can take faster charging and discharging cycles with less damage. Avevai specifies a 200,000 km or five-year warranty and says a 22kW AC charging station will fully charge the Iona Truck in two hours, while the electric van takes less than four hours to be fully charged.

Avevai designed their Iona series in Singapore but turned to Stuttgart in Germany to develop a custom chassis. The development at Daimler and Foton, longstanding partners, incorporated all performance and safety-related components such as brakes, bearings, drive and control systems, as well as insulation and NVH, to comply with international standards.

The body can be customised for various requirements with short and long wheel-base versions capable of carrying a payload of up to 2,500 kilos and up to 18 cubic metre of cargo. Foton of China will take over production of the electric vehicles for Avevai.

The start-up set the on-sale of their electric vehicle series for February 2019, the first in China. Other markets such as Europe and the U.S. will follow from May next year.
